As long as I can remember, I have enjoyed exploring harbors. They are usually hub of activity for people and wildlife. This is Cordova, Alaska early in the morning at low tide but could be any of the picturesque harbors in the Pacific Northwest. This is probably the most detailed painting I have done.

This is a portrait of a Golden Eagle. I am always impressed by the aerobatic ablility of these large birds. Although not above scavenging, they are more predatory than their Bald Eagle cousins. They are excellent fliers and usually attack their unsuspecting prey from a high-speed dive after a seemingly methodical plan of attack. I have seen them catch hoary marmots, squirrels and young dall sheep.
This painting turned into a landscape of sorts with the variety of different feather shapes, textures and patterns.

I spotted this great oak tree several years ago in the mountains near my home and it stuck in my head. When I finally decided to paint it, I began in the studio using a small pencil sketch and memory. Then, as I often do with larger studio paintings, I returned to the spot when the painting was about 3/4 done to make adjustments. To my suprise, the old tree had fallen down and was all but gone. This was disappointing but it fueled my desire to do it justice. I put in a mule deer to add some interest and provide some scale.

I wanted to do a large powerful painting for a centerpiece at shows and a bull moose seemed like a fitting subject. I gave him an aggressive pose with ears pinned back as if he was responding to a challenge.
I had to get it out of the studio because our dog kept growling at it. He's not real sharp, but I considered it a compliment.

I never get tired of painting the color patterns on the pronghorn antelope. They are built much different than any other North American animal, especially their head. I have to force myself to not think about deer or other animals that you think would be similar. I have gone through many drawings and studies to get comfortable drawing these unique animals.

Old bison bulls eventually get kicked out of the herd by a younger bull. These old bulls live alone or with a few other bulls in the same situation. From my experience, the solitary ones tend to be pretty cranky. Most likely because they are an easier target for predators. They often take out their frustation on medium-sized trees, sometimes pushing them completely over.

It was kind of tricky figuring it all out, but here it is. The title is typically used to describe someone who is wasting time, but has a double meaning in this case.

This is a male Northern Shoveler feeding in shallow water. They are named for their large, flat bill which helps them sift their diet of small invertebrates from the water and mud. "Spoony" is a common nickname for this colorful duck.

This is a young bull moose in the summer. His growing antlers are covered with velvet. In the fall he will scrape off the velvet to expose his fully grown, hard horns. They grow a new set each year.

A Snapping Turtle lies motionless in the brackish water with its mouth wide open, using a worm-like appendage on the tip of its tongue to lure fish within striking distance. This painting received an "Award of Excellence" from the Society of Animal Artists.
